What are those viral scooters/hoverboards on vine, YouTube, Instagram and just about every social site?
You know the ones with the lights and it appears that the vine celebrity is gliding around on the ground.
Well it is like a stand up Segway, except way more compact (average 22 pounds depending on brand). You control it by adjusting your weight in the direction you want to go. It lacks the handlebars that a Segway has. I am still not so sure what to call it so ‘scooter’ should be good enough. Although the internet has pretty much spoken and is calling it a hoverboard (even though it doesn’t hover -_-).
The scooter is super easy to use. If you want to go forward shift your weight forward, if you want to go left lean in to your left a bit. The only thing it can’t do is fly.
So this scooter can be classified as a Two wheel self-balancing scooter, which can go about 6.5 mph (again depending on brand). Which is double the average walk speed for a person. Whatever you want to call this ‘scooter’ it is pretty sweet, and I can thank all those Vine celebrities for posting so many videos of themselves rolling around on them having a good ol’ time and getting this geek interested in this new piece of technology that I wanted to get my hands on.
How much are two wheeled scooters?
These viral scooters/hoverboard can vary in price from anywhere from $250 – to in the thousands. The more famous brand name is probably UWheel, but like with many of these types of devices they are all probably made in the same Chinese factory. Which means I didn’t mind not buying the super expensive brand name one that everyone was using.
I got the “Two Wheels Self Balancing Mini Smart Electric Scooter” off of amazon in white. It had a good rating and I wasn’t too worried about the quality. It only cost $336.47 at the time (it still may be the same), but it was half the price of the UWheel. It is probably a good inexpensive UWheel alternative, but don’t quote me on it, I won’t know for sure unless they send me one my way (wink wink).
Other UWheel alternatives
Honestly have no idea if these are better than what I have, but Hey it is always worth the shot.
ForTech 10” Tire Smart Self-balancing Two-wheel Electric Scooter with LED Light. It comes in a couple different colors to add some flare to the scooter.

Or if you really really need to have the name brand that a lot of people are using visit UWheel.
